Nate Ogle led GM with 20 points and Noel Obusan chipped in 14 to help lead mason to a decisive 70-48 win over William Monroe in the tie breaker game for the BRD crown last night. Obusan scored a pretty reverse layup off the opening tip after a quick pass from Jeremy Stewart, and after a Monroe bucket knotted the score at 2, the Mustangs simply blitzed their opponents for the rest of the game. Ogle hit a three-pointer after a Philippe Griffiths (10 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals) pull up jumper to give Mason a 7-2 lead. WM (17-6, 12-3 BRD) hit a three of their own but didn't score again in the opening stanza, while Mason continued to fill the cup. The score was 20-5 Stangs after one as Ogle and Obusan scored 7 apiece in the frame.
Two huge three point bombs from senior guard Drew Nickle helped push the Mason lead to 20 in the second quarter, and almost flawless defense stifled the explosive Monroe post game, leading to steals by GM and fouls by the Greene Dragons. Mason led 37-15 at half and were not threatened after the break.
Mason, who finished the regular season at 19-4, is the number one seed in the Bull Run District tournament and will host winless Rappahannock County Friday night at 8:00. The GM girls are also the top seed in their tourney and host Rapp as well in the opener of the double header. Game time is 6:00 at MEH for the girls, with the boys to follow.
