Nate Ogle's three-point bomb with 52 seconds left in the game gave his team the lead for good in a wild 55-50 win Friday night at MEH over the Strasburg Rams. Mason (15-3, 10-1 BRD) trailed 47-46 when Ogle connected off the glass in dramatic fashion. The Rams (9-8, 5-5) misfired on their next three possessions and clutch free throw shooting from Noel Obusan and Dimitri Venets sealed the deal for the home squad.
Strasburg jumped out to an 8-0 lead 5 minutes into the game as the Mustangs couldn't muster the energy or patience to answer. After a timeout, Obusan (11 points) nailed a three-pointer to get Mason off the schneid. Eion Oosterbaan gave his squad a huge lift, scoring Mason's final 8 points of the period, the last three on a buzzer beater from behind the arc to make the score 11-8 Mason after one.
GM would stretch the lead to 14 in the third period, and a runner in the lane by Jeremy Stewart gave them a 39-29 lead entering the final quarter. But foul trouble caught up with GM in the fourth, as Strasburg made a steady parade of trips to the free throw line and knocked down 5 of 6 to climb back in the game. A phantom foul on a three-point heave from the Rams on Philippe Griffiths allowed the 'Burg to take the lead at 45-44 with 2:12 remaining. The game see sawed back and forth from there, with Ogle putting his team back on top 46-45 with an offensive rebound putback. Strasburg then scored on a backdoor layup before Ogle's 3-point heroics put GM back on top for good.
Mason hosts The Avalon School Monday at 7:45 before taking on winless Rappahannock County Tuesday. The Rapp game begins at 6:15 as the first game of a boy/girl doubleheader. The Panthers don't field JV squads so Tuesdays games are varsity only.
