Philippe Griffiths once again feasted on the Madison County Mountaineers and teammate Nate Ogle got his fill as well, leading the Mustangs to a convincing 65-52 win Wednesday night at MEH. Griffiths hit 5 three-pointers on the night, and made all 5 of his free throw attempts as well. Ogle scored 19, including two triples of his own, and was also a perfect 5-5 at the stripe.
Mason (12-3, 7-1 BRD) jumped to a 19-13 lead after the first quarter on the strength of Griffiths long range bombs, and were never headed. Griffiths has made 13 3's in the two meetings with the Mountaineers (9-6, 5-3), and the Mustangs as a team have hit a whopping 25 triples in the two matchups.
Point guards Noel Obusan and Eion Oosterbaan continued their rock-solid play for GM, scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively. Oosterbaan, arguably the best sixth man in the Bull Run District, has stepped in for 2011 All-District and All-Region performer Jeremy Stewart this season. Stewart suffered a broken thumb in Mason's first scrimmage, and contracted mononucleosis shortly after his return to the lineup in December. Stewart hasn't played in 3 1/2 weeks, but is eyeing a return to the court on Monday to give practice a go.
Mason travels to second place Clarke County Friday night for a key BRD game. If Clarke wins, they will tie Mason atop the standings; a Mason victory puts them two games up on the Eagles and would give them a sweep of the season series. William Monroe currently sits alone in second at 6-2, while Madison County is 4th at 5-3. Tip-off in Berryville is at 7:45.
