Despite a 23 point explosion in the fourth quarter last night, GM lost to Yorktown 60-54 in the semifinals of the Joe Cascio Tournament at Falls Church High. The Patriots improve to 5-3 while Mason drops to 6-3. Nate Ogle led the way for Mason with 14 points, followed by Eion Oosterbaan with a career high 13 and Noel Obusan with 11. All of Obusan's points came in the fourth period.
Yorktown took command of the game early, jumping out to a 15-6 lead after the first quarter. They would extend the lead to 20-9 before GM closed the gap to 5 at halftime. The second half started a streak of point blank misses in the paint by the Stangs, and defensive lapses at crucial times allowed the Pats to open the lead back to double digits before Mason found their stride.
Two huge three pointers by Oosterbaan - he nailed 4 of Mason's 7 triples for the game - in the 4th kept his team in the mix, and Obusan put on a dazzling display of his own, but again missed opportunities doomed the Mustangs. GM went 7-13 from the charity stripe in the final stanza while Yorktown was 15-18.
GM takes on Freedom-South Riding in the third place game tonight at 6:15. The Eagles lost in overtime to Thomas Jefferson in the other semifinal. Mason beat Freedom 61-49 earlier this season.
