Noel Obusan scored 17 points, including all 10 of his team's markers in the fourth quarter, to lead GM to a 49-41 win over Marshall in game one of the Joe Cascio Holiday Classic at Falls Church High School on Tuesday afternoon. Philippe Griffiths continued his torrid shooting from deep, burying 4 more three pointers to account for his 12 points on the night. Nate Ogle and Dmitri Venets added 5 apiece for Mason, who move to 6-2 on the year.
Leading 28-20 at half, Mason scored the first 4 points of the third quarter to take thier biggest lead of the game, but Marshall stormed back with their pressure defense and took advantage of some shaky defense from their opponents to pull within one near the end of the quarter. A Griffiths 3-ball at the buzzer gave his team a huge lift going into the fourth period, setting up Obusan's heroics.
After Marshall (4-3) tied the game with 3:30 to play, Obusan nailed a three pointer on Mason's next possession, then answered a Statesman bucket with another three pointer to push the lead to 4. The Mustangs went to a zone defense and stymied Marshall towards the end of the game, and Obusan capped off his personal scoring festival with a steal and a coast to coast drive for a bucket and a foul, putting the game out of reach with under a minute to play.
GM takes on Yorktown today at 6:15 in the second round of the tourney for the right to go to the championship game tomorrow. Yorktown beat Mason 72-52 in last year's final.
