George Mason High School
Despite draining 13 three-point field goals, the Mustangs came up short on the defensive end Tuesday night, gift wrapping a victory to the homestanding Madison County Mountaineers 57-53 in the Bull Run District opener for both teams. Mason falls to 3-2 while MC improves to 2-4.
Philippe Griffiths put on an amazing show from long distance, nailing 8 3s on the night on his way to 26 points. Nate Ogle scored 12 and grabbed 8 rebounds, and Eion Oosterbaan added 7 points. GM jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on two Griffiths three pointers, but Madison used their superior size to seize control of the game soon after, building a 19-10 lead in the second period. Mason was victimized throughout the game by Madison's transition offense, giving the Mounties many fast break layups and easy buckets.
The fourth quarter was a wild affair, with both teams hitting huge shots, but again the Mountaineers made the plays on their home court when they counted the most. GM tied the game three times but could never take the lead. Two Mason turnovers and a reaching foul in the last minute sealed their fate, with Madison hitting their last 4 free throws and making two uncontested layups for the final margin. The Stangs were 1-6 from the stripe in the final stanza, and only hit 5 two-point baskets on the night.
GM looks to rebound Thursday when they host Clarke County. Game time is 7:45 at MEH.
